My new Entry-level Digital Camera – Olympus VG-110!

OlympusVG110DigitalCamera

I have bought a new entry-level Digital Camera – Olympus VG-110! 🙂 Obviously the above photo was not taken with the camera, but I used my cell phone to take a picture of the camera itself. All photo-enthusiasts, mid-level photographers & advanced level DSLR type pros – Beware! Competition is coming your way 😀

OlympusVG-110-PhototakenoutsideparkI generally don’t purchase anything on impulse. But this was almost one. I just researched for two-three hours to decide on the model that I want to buy. Actually I wanted an entry level camera because my cell phone camera images were becoming increasingly blurry. I had rejected almost 40% of the images that were taken by my cell phone, during a recent outing. My cell phone doesn’t take close-up shots or long shots well enough.

OlympusVG110-Phototakeninpark02The Olympus VG-110 is a 12 Mega Pixel Camera! If an entry level camera has 12 MP, I wonder how much resolution the advanced models support! I also wonder if anyone needs so much resolution. In fact, I have set the default resolution to 3 MP because I don’t want each image to take up a huge space in my 1 GB data card that I have inserted in to this. Actually, I further reduce the resolution to around 350×466 using GIMP before uploading to my blog because I don’t want to upload huge files. Besides, there is a limitation to the width of any blog page, I guess.

OlympusVG110-Phototakenfromthirdfloor This model has a 4x Optical Zoom which is ok for an entry level camera, and sufficient for my minimum requirements. Actually, I had to go near the objects and take their images (previously) but now I just use the zoom to get closer to the image before clicking them. This camera has a big enough 2.7″ LCD display to preview/ view the images. It seems optical zoom is fine, and does not reduce the quality of images. Digital Zoom on the other hand, reduces the quality.

OlympusVG-110PhototakenatPark01This camera can also capture video with audio (I wish it could also capture only audio, like my cell phone) up to VGA resolution and 30 frames per second. But again, I am just using QVGA resolution (which is smaller than VGA) with 15 frames per second. And in this minimum setting, it takes 10 MB of space to record a small video (with audio) for just 30 seconds. With my Internet connection, I am not sure how I am going to upload such huge videos to Youtube! Does anyone know if we can compress the avi video before uploading to Youtube?

One crucial reason which made me decide on the Olympus model instead of the Sony/ Canon models that I had shortlisted along with this (in the same range) was the fact that it had rechargeable Li-Ion batteries. So, we can just charge the batteries like how we do with our cell phone. The other two models had only replaceable AA batteries.

Any Digital Camera photo shooting tips/ suggestions are welcome in the comments section. Though I might one day become a pro, I am right now a novice! 🙂

Good to know that you have the same brand too. I am not very knowledgeable in Digital Camera brands and hence was not sure if it was good or not. But for my requirements, I guess this is more than enough!

    Wow new camera,good luck.
Recently my nikon camera stopped working and i got normal sony camera with 14.1 mega pixel

    1. Rajesh K

That should be a mid-level camera in Sony. I too shortlisted one with 8 MP or 10 MP (I don’t remember – Not an issue anyway) but it did not have rechargeable batteries. Otherwise, perhaps I would have bought that Sony camera.

There was one more issue – The Sony model that I shortlisted was released only for India. So, I had my doubts there also. But this Olympus model is available across the world.

    1. Rajesh K

Yeah, finally I got one. Actually, my cell phone camera was good enough except for a few times when I really felt the need for the Optical Zoom. I also notice that long shots are better with this camera.

The camera makes a huge difference. On my photo blog when I compare the photos I have taken with a lesser camera and the new one I have I feel like deleting the old photos! And the funny thing is that soon one gets tired of the old one as well!
Anyway, congrats on your camera and happy shooting.

I forgot about your photo blog. I am going to compete against your blog too 🙂

Congrats on the new loot. The tough competition begins 😉

  14. Reema

nice choice but set it to 5 MP. 3 MP is too low. Bit more zoom would have better. How much did it cost? I use Sony Cybershot W170 and it has Li-on battery.

  15. Reema

and oh congrats on the new camera.
