My Autobiography – Crazy about Signatures!

Before you think that I am crazy about getting other people’s signatures like film stars, cricketers, etc., just remember that you are visiting DI’s blog. DI is always above everyone else, at least in his own mind 🙂 I am talking about being crazy about my own signature! I would like to show you all something that is not exactly modern art or doodle –

Scribbled-Signatures-1

Isn’t that a breath-taking photo? 😛 This is how the last pages of my school notebooks looked like! This is the only note-book from my school-days that has stayed with me. I have a strange habit of signing in it (with date) occasionally, and looking at the signatures back, after a few years. Nostalgia 🙂

I still remember the day I was startled looking at a signature. I was in sixth standard, back then, and I was going to a new school the following year. Someone suggested that I get the signatures of other students and keep it as a memory (I lost this diary recently). While most of the students just wrote a name or had ordinary signatures, a couple of them had awesome-looking signatures. No one would believe that 6th Std students could sign like that. I was awe-struck. That, planted a deep desire in me to develop a good signature.

I finally managed to develop one in 8th Std. Or maybe 7th. Don’t remember. This one –

Scribbled-Signatures-3

I hope you are able to see it, it’s in the middle of the photo, above  7) 8) 9) 🙂 A few jealous(!) fellow students asked me, why I was signing in Tamil. I had a difficult time convincing them that the sign was in English! So, I developed another signature –

Scribbled-Signatures-2

As shown in the two signatures above, sometimes there was a flower, sometimes there wasn’t, based on my mood. The dates of the above signatures are authentic. But that ‘wow! serious! great!’ was added sometime later, when I became over-enthusiastic 🙂

I love signing-off to glory. Once when I was busy signing behind the notebook during a class, a teacher caught me and checked what I was doing. After looking at the scribbled signature pages, she told me that I would become an executive one day! 🙂

Later on, I developed the signature that I use now (I will not show that here). I think I was in College 1st year, by then. I had this desire to show my sign to others and feel proud when they admire it. But it should occur naturally, no? So, I waited for a chance.

That chance came when our librarian asked a group of us to sign in a form. We were standing around the table and I snatched the form to sign first. I made a swift and large signature, in style, so that it would be visible to all. As I expected, everyone were looking at it with wide eyes. At last, I had realized my dreams! I was in cloud 9 🙂

But the librarian brought me back to the earth. He said, “That space was meant to contain all your signatures, not just your signature alone. Were you thinking we wanted your autograph?” Hmmm… So, that’s why people were looking at it strangely! 🙂

Of course, these days I don’t keep signing frequently behind notebooks or anything. I am saving all that energy for signing on my autobiography book, which I plan to publish after 30 years. After all, it’s going to be a best-seller and thousands of fans might want me to sign in their copies, right? 🙂

PS: The handwriting in the second photo is not mine. Mine is worser than that 😛

Good one. The only signature that counts is your ability to sign exactly the same way you gave your bank as specimen. I have lot of problems. My signature does not tally most of the time.

I gave the specimen signature to my bank years ago. I regularly sign and give cheques for credit cards. I guess they look alike, haven’t heard from the bank on a mismatch, till now.

You know what, the bank authorities tried convincing me to switch to EFT electronic payments for my credit card payments. I would not listen as I will lose an opportunity to sign on cheques! I HATE digital signatures.

Oh I was obsessed with signatures too! It is always a nice feeling to look into your last pages. they always carry lotso f stories.
Btw was that book cricket? The scores against the names? (the numbered ones)?

    1. Rajesh K

I am wondering if that was book cricket or real cricket. Me and my cousins were playing both, and used similar formats to record scores. The chances of it being book-cricket is less because there are odd-number scores and the total is just 21!

Sometimes, we count pages ending in ‘8’ as 1, and hence odd-numbered scores are possible, but such a low score is quite impossible on a book-cricket match, that too with 11 wickets! I think it was real-cricket, played inside our home 🙂

But for that you need to wait 30 more years. Just 30. But time will fly away, don’t worry 🙂

I wish I had practised my signature as you had done so that I could have a uniform one now and don’t need to keep updating mine at the bank 😛 All the best for that best seller and remember, I am a regular reader, ok?

    1. Rajesh K

Yes. But regular readers might have already read most of my autobiography online! But I will still send you all a signed copy in order to get an unbiased (read: positive) review of the book in your blogs 🙂

I too used to sign my name on the last pages of my book. Sometimes i used to practice my dad’s signature as it was toughest signature i have ever seen.

I still have my small book where my classmates wrote a quote and signed…

    1. Rajesh K

Only practice dad’s signature or once in a while use it in report cards, etc? 😛

I lost the only book with signatures 🙁 Good to know that some of you still have it.
