My New Android Phone – Lenovo A390!!

Lenovo-A390-Android-Phone

This is my new Android phone – Lenovo A390!! I know, I’ve joined the Android club rather late, but the blame goes to my old HTC Windows mobile. That mobile has been with me for more than 5 years and it just doesn’t break or hang! How can the investment for a new phone be justified, then?

Even now nothing happened to it – that’s one reason why I can recommend HTC mobile to anyone who wants a rugged phone that doesn’t break 🙂 – but I went ahead and bought this Lenovo phone, anyway. I searched for the perfect phone at the perfect price for maybe 4-5 weeks. Whoever said buying a phone is easy?

At last I zeroed in on this Lenovo A390 phone which costs just 5.6k INR (Amazon.in) and comes with the following specs:

  1. Dual-core processor, 512 MB RAM (same as my laptop!).
  2. 5 MP Camera, Dual SIM, 4″ Screen, 4 GB internal memory; 2 GB for apps.
  3. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich something (Yes, it’s old when compared to the latest Android 4.4 Kit Kat, but this in itself is too much for my limited use!).
  4. GPS, FM Radio, Some sensors, USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, 1500 mAh battery, etc.
  5. Excellent value for money.

It comes with many inbuilt apps – yet to explore what they do. I like the user interface (that you see above). This phone has excellent speakers, which was a very important criterion for me. Earphone quality is average – need to buy some good earphones. Right now my laptop earphone fits into it and is good. The touch screen quality is also good.

The built-in games are pathetic. I need to download some good games. I also need to download new apps, but right now clueless. Any suggestions welcome 🙂 This Android seems to be more complex than the Windows 6.2 OS that occupied my previous phone. I do miss the simplicity (and familiarity) of Windows! But I hope I’ll get used to this, soon.

As soon as I put my SIM from my old phone to this, none of my contacts – except one – got transferred! I guess it’s time to do some manual re-entry, while taking the opportunity to delete many old contacts by not copying them here 🙂

The power button seems to be the only problem – the way they have placed it makes it very difficult to operate. Since the phone goes to sleep mode pretty quickly, I need to use it often and it’s somewhat difficult. I don’t want to return it for this small reason, so I am keeping it. Also, a LED indicator to indicate charging status when it’s put on charge, would have been very helpful.

For a new phone, I can recommend it to anyone. Not sure how sturdy and reliable it is going to be, with usage. Since I am not going to put any big games or apps, I think I should not find any lag/performance issues. I will update this space in the future, if I find anything abnormal.

For now, I am a happy Android phone owner. You can no longer intimidate me by telling things like, ‘WhatsApp’, ‘TempleRun’, ‘Evernote’ and other such mobile lingo 🙂

PS: Just curious – what do you guys use your smart phone for? Any useful/interesting things for me to try? I was using my old phone for making and receiving calls. Yes, I know – it’s a terrible waste of Windows 6.2 OS!

Glad you bought Lanovo A390. I understand it has slot for 2 SIM cards in case you want to do some hanky panky. All I want to know – is this unlocked? Or, you have to unlock it?

How do I use my smart phone? I work for a telecommunications company. And, all my personal calls (domestic and international) are free to me. But I use my cell on only 2 occasions. To call my wife I am stuck in the traffic and will be home late. To call my secretary I am stuck in the traffic and will be in office late.

In India, phones are not locked to carriers. Due to the dual-SIM, I can use one carrier for mobile and one provider for 3G/data. No restrictions there. I think they tried locking iPhone with some carrier when it was released here, but it didn’t work!

You too use your mobile phone for the same purpose as mine? So, I have company 🙂 But I am determined to use this phone for some activity other than making and receiving calls. Let me see if I get some ideas for that in comments.

So much research? My son researched for me online and got one via flipcart. Difference in cost is quite a lot from buying from a shop!

Yes, there is considerable difference between shops and online outlets like flipkart and amazon. But sometimes, shopkeepers reduce the price of certain models to less than what is sold online, primarily if they have excess stock and they want to sell if off. Let’s see how long this lasts.

Wow! Your phone looks cool! Welcome to the android phone users club 🙂
Agree, buying a phone is not an easy task now-a-days. There are so many choices and options that you are thoroughly lost and confused!
I use my phone for reading tweets, checking emails and responding to urgent ones, Whatsapp, recently read a book on Kindle app on phone, playing some word games. And when I am traveling, I use it to blog too.

Also I have a Dropbox on phone. So all my important files are loaded on my phone… can access and use them anytime anywhere when I am not near my laptop. I find MDScan Lite good too, it’s a scanner, comes in handy when one needs to scan some document/ticket/bill in a jiffy. I have WordPress downloaded on it so my blog is accessible through it and I have Bloglovin too…

You should write a post on ‘How I use my Mobile phone effectively’, one of these days. Would be very useful to entry-level mobile users like me 🙂

5 years is definitely long in smartphone-years so dont worry. Good selection. I would recommend Micromax too, it has better specs ( more RAM and internal memory – more apps ). I use Canvas 4. One absolutely good thing about Android is, this would be the last time you manually type the same contact info while changing phones. Once done, sync it and you are good to go. I would recommend Whatsapp (obviously!), Google keep, backgrounds, Blogger ( or wordpress), chrome, Google Drive, Fb, twitter(if u are into it), instagram and any games you want 🙂

    1. Rajesh K

I’ll have to check what this Google Keep is, thanks for your recommendations anyway 🙂

Awesome, so now you have joined the “smart” people with smart phones 😀
I like Evernote, wordpress, whatsapp, flixster, shazam, night sky apps. I have kind of stopped playing games on the phone, just got bored for some reason. I like angry birds and deleted all the other games that I had installed earlier. Best way to know what apps to download would be to look at the top free apps in the app store.
