Bombay Shirt Company is a customised shirt maker based in India who enables customers to design their own shirts. You can either visit their website and order online, or better, you can visit one of their stores currently located at Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru [India], Dubai and New York.
The advantage of visiting one of their stores is, they have a designer to guide you with the selections & they have an in-house tailor who can take more accurate measurements.
Recently, I had an opportunity to visit an outlet of Bombay Shirt Company located at Adyar, Chennai. They offer shirts in two ranges – Indian (2K INR to 5K INR, approx) and International (More than 5K INR). Actually, these rates are for fabric types – and there are many. I selected the “stretch” fabric as it was very different and maybe exciting 🙂
Once we select the base fabric, they gave me plenty of further options to further customise my shirt. Actually, they have a tablet. As we select each component, they select the appropriate option on the tablet so that the order process would be complete with minimum typing/touching effort from the customer!
In addition to the fabric, they gave me options to select the collar type, collar colour (inside/outside), button type/colour, pocket style, placket type, cuff type and colour, monogram initials (up to three letters), bottom cut type, etc. I didn’t even know there were so many options in shirts – my local tailor shows me a few options that he has taken the liberty to use on my shirt – only while delivering 😉
Speaking of options, there was an in-store designer who guided me with matching colours, accessories, etc. I took his suggestions but I also used my creativity while selecting. They also have an in-house tailor who was there to ensure that the shirt would be a good fit.
It takes around a week for them to ready your shirt upon ordering (or let you trial it – if it’s your first time). Yesterday I got a notification via email that my shirt is ready. As I am travelling, I am yet to pick it up – will update this space with the photo of the shirt once I get to collect and wear it.
I only wish they would also offer matching customised trousers – maybe they didn’t find as many options to customise in pants 🙂
Altogether, this is a different experience. Now men too can match their style according to the occasion or the demands of their business meetings. At the least, you’ll look different and your fabric will have a professional/premium touch.
