The (Rail) Coach Restaurant @ Chennai Rail Museum

The Chennai Rail Museum has opened a new A/C Restaurant inside its premises, aptly titled – ‘The Coach Restaurant’. I got to know that this is the first restaurant built inside an actual rail coach, in India. The second one is coming up in Mumbai – it seems.

Since this venue is closer to our house (ICF – Villivakkam) it’s easy for us to go there whenever. We went to the Chennai Rail Museum again to have a look at this newly opened restaurant and the metal sculptures made with scrap materials (I am yet to make a video for it – will share the blog post once it is ready).

If you have seen the pictures in the above-embedded video, you’ll notice that this is an upscale restaurant with nice decor and good seating/arrangements. But as it was a Veg & Non-Veg restaurant, we didn’t eat there.

The prices start from 100 rupees (for a lime juice). They also seem to be offering a buffet just outside this coach – not sure it it’s operational yet. Inside, you can order a-la-carte.

Operation Timings (as mentioned in their coach, now): Lunch – 12 Noon to 3 PM. Dinner – 7 PM to 10.30 PM.

Since this restaurant is located within the Chennai Rail Museum premises, I guess you’ll have to buy museum tickets as well. Now they are priced at Rs. 50 per adult including one joy train ride and 10 rupee snacks voucher. Of course, you can take many selfies with the old discarded train engines and coaches. Now there is even a train-themed art gallery!

So, it’s gonna be a 2-in-1 experience – plan to spend at least two-hours on your visit.

The entire setup (including the painting on the coach) looks quite beautiful. Hope the taste is equally good. If someone has food there, drop a comment below and let us know how it was.

I have been to a similar restaurant in Bangalore. But it didn’t have a real coach. This looks like a real coach. Nice.
